Fun Fun Fun Fest wrap-up part 2
Day 1 of Fun Fun Fun and we head to the blue stage to catch Houston rapper Fat Tony. Sonzala has been blogging and tweeting about this guy for a while but I slept on him until now. Check out his music at http://fattonyrap.bandcamp.com/.
We stayed for Black Milk who was backed by a band (who you can’t see from my angle).
One of the Austin bands I discovered at this festival was Ocote Soul Sounds.
Serg and I took a break from the music to check out the Sony PS3 tent. In my humble opinion, the corporate sponsors at Fun Fun Fun Fest didn’t overdo it with the branding, which was nice.
We stayed at the Embassy Suites which is a short walk from Auditorium Shores, and — THIS IS IMPORTANT — they have FREE happy hour every evening from 5:30 to 7:30. That’s right. FREE DRINKS. It was a nice way to rest up and refresh for the evening performances.
I was feeling sick and missed both Danzig Legacy and Public Enemy. I would have chosen Danzig, but I think it was meant for me to NOT see him that night as I would have been sorely disappointed. You can read about the performance here. Longtime fan Jess did go, and to this day doesn’t want to talk about it.
That night we hit up the Kool Keith/Death Grips/B L A C K I E/A.Dd+ show at Empire Automotive, a former auto shop turned venue.
We met these guys from local crew Subkulture Patriots, Doktor Holiday and Cap’n Kirk. Dok showed us a photo of his 30-deep vintage boombox collection.
Both Sacramento’s Death Grips and Houston’s B L A C K I E are acts that need to be seen live to be fully appreciated. They appear the next day of the Fest on the black stage.
Kool Keith’s set was excellent, he did a few Ultramagnetic MCs classics, like “Ease Back” and “Two Brothers With Checks,” and of course the Dr. Octagon hits. When “Blue Flowers” got a huge reaction it kind of bummed me out, but that’s what I get for being a die-hard Ultra fan.
I’ll wrap up this wrap-up in my next post.
