The Battle: DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock

October 4, 2011    Events    Comments Off on The Battle: DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock

This clip is from early in The Battle at Mighty, which began with Premier playing Pete Rock productions and Pete Rock playing Premier’s, which best believe included plenty of Gang Starr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth classics. Premier played A.D.O.R.’s “Let It All Hang Out,” which is one of my favorites but not recognized by most of the young crowd.

They then went into more hip-hop, including a substantial Beastie Boys set. From hip-hop to funk (James Brown) to soul (Curtis Mayfield), Preem and Pete went all over the map with the audience singing along (or just waving when they didn’t know the song) the entire trip. Late in the night I heard the “I Dream of Jeannie” theme song and Preem yelling “I was born in ’66!” followed by him shouting the lyrics to “The Brady Bunch” theme (“The youngest one in CURLS!”). Hilarious.

Saturday night was The Foundation at SOM, and Mr. E’s 40th birthday celebration (hence the 40 in the foreground). Pete Rock and Premier DJing your birthday party, oh yeah, no big deal.
