SXSW Music 2012 Day 1

SXSW was a blast once again. A big thanks is due to Matt Sonzala for working hard at SXSW so that we could have so much fun.

SXSW Music started on Tuesday this year but we waited until Wednesday to hit Austin. After picking up badges and enjoying beers at Lovejoy’s, we ran into JBird of Rhymesayers.

That night we saw was an all-dope lineup at Lustre Pearl for the Life or Death/Mishka/R.A.P. Music showcase, starting with Cities Aviv who was followed by G-Side. Lustre Pearl is on Rainey Street, an up-and-coming area of bars and food trucks that was a short walk from our hotel.

Hung out with the homies Isaiah Toothtaker and Young God of Blue Sky Black Death, who introduced me to Nacho Picasso.

We ran to Hotel Vegas to catch Juvenile and Mannie Fresh. Caught the end of Katey Red’s set which segued into Mannie Fresh’s DJ set. No Juvie appeared, so we got back to Lustre Pearl in time for Trash Talk.

Next up was Prodigy, who was eventually joined by Havoc and Big Noyd for a Mobb Deep reunion which culminated in “Shook Ones Part 2.” Killer Mike followed with a strong performance and when El-P joined him onstage, it was game over.
