DJ Steve Dee

May 21, 2012    Hip-Hop History, Random    No Comments »

I’m not going to attempt to explain the importance of Steve Dee to DJing and hip-hop. This video does it better. Let me just say that Steve is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.

I really appreciate that Steve called it “The Funk,” which indicates a feeling in the soul, a rhythm in the body — not to take away from the cleverness and technical skill it took to invent what became a key skill of DJing.

Also recently posted is a clip from the 1990 New Music Seminar Battle for World Supremacy. It’s the final with Francesco from Italy vs. Steve Dee. I was there, so this is especially exciting for me to see. Check it!

I even saw Steve when he toured with Japanese singing star Toshi Kubota in 2000. And he has a daughter named Stephanie! Call me a fan.
